Foods to Avoid during Pregnancy

Without a doubt, it’s important to eat a balanced and healthy meal if you want to enjoy a healthier lifestyle– and it’s more essential when you’re already pregnant, ’cause there’s another being inside your stomach who needs the nutrients and vitamins you could get from the food you consume. You must nourish your baby more than you nourish yourself. Likewise, it’s also important to figure out which foods are safe for consumption and which ones could potentially harm your baby. Here are some of them.

Soft Cheeses

If you love dairy products, especially soft cheeses, it’s one of the foods that you should probably stay away from if you’re pregnant. Soft cheeses contain bacteria, known as “Listeria” and it’s very harmful for an expecting mother, that it could even be the cause of miscarriage. Listeria could cross the placenta and this could infect the baby, poison the blood, and it’s considered to be life-threatening in some cases. Some of the soft cheeses that you should definitely avoid, includes Camembert, Brie, Feta, Roquefort, and Mexican style cheeses. On the other hand, soft-cheeses that are made from pasteurized milk are safe to eat.

Deli Meat

Just like soft cheeses, pregnant women should also refrain from eating deli meat, because these meat products are also contaminated with Listeria. Though, if it’s impossible for you to completely avoid deli meat, you should reheat the meat until it’s steaming, just to kill the bacteria.

Fish with Mercury

Seafood, especially fishes that are high in mercury should be avoided. When consumed during pregnancy, it could cause developmental delays and even brain damage. Swordfish, shark, tilefish, and mackerel, are just some of the fishes that are high in mercury content. Likewise, even tuna contains mercury as well, and it should be eaten in moderation; additionally, it’s best to opt for chunk and canned tuna.

Caffeine

Despite the fact that most studies suggest it’s fine to consume coffee, as long as it’s in moderation, other professionals believe that caffeine could also increase the risks of miscarriage. That’s why it’s important to avoid anything with caffeine during the first trimester, to ensure that your baby would grow healthy.

Alcohol

No amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy and it should be avoided at all cost. Furthermore, prenatal exposure to alcohol could negatively affect the baby’s development and it increases the risk of miscarriage. In fact, depending on the timing, amount, and pattern of alcohol consumption, it could result to “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.” However, if alcohol is accidentally consumed before knowing that you’re pregnant, it’s best to stop drinking that and continue to avoid this drink, especially during breastfeeding. Alcohol is harmful for the baby, and it reaches him during breastfeeding.

Raw Eggs

Raw eggs, or any food with raw eggs should be avoided because of salmonella. Thus, some brands of mayonnaise, Caesar dressings, custards, and ice cream are never advisable for pregnant mommies.

Although, if the recipe is cooked at some point, this could reduce the risks. Commercially manufactured products, such as eggnog, dressing, and ice cream are also safe, because they’re utilizing pasteurized eggs.
